In a make-believe village, Lumi opened an umbrella shop. Her first customer was a duck carrying a book. “Something for a rainy reading day, please,” said the duck. Pip held up a tiny umbrella. “One beak-sized roof!”
The duck shook her head. “My beak is fine. I want to keep the pages dry.” Lumi put the tiny umbrella over the open book. Both edges stuck out. “Oh dear,” said Pip. “Only the middle of the story gets a roof!”
Lumi chose a wider umbrella and fixed it to a stand. She put scrap paper beneath it, then asked Pip to sprinkle a little water from above. They checked every edge of the paper. Pip saluted. “Official rain cloud, reporting for duty!”
The paper stayed dry, including its edges. The duck settled at the covered reading stand. Her feet were happy in a puddle while her book stayed out of the rain. She opened the first page. “Perfect! A mystery with a completely dry ending.”
